What are paint and construction chemicals and how do you choose them?

Paint and construction chemicals are the additives and raw materials used in the formulations of paint, coating, adhesive and building material producers. Dispersants spread the pigment and raise colour strength; wetting agents lower surface tension; defoamers remove production and application foam; thickeners (HEC etc.) set rheology; coalescents enable film formation at low temperature; emulsifiers give stability in binder production.

Selection depends on binder type, pigment volume concentration, target product (interior/exterior, industrial, adhesive) and application method.

Selection criteria

  • Compatibility with the binder system (acrylic, styrene-acrylic, vinyl, alkyd)
  • Problem to solve: foam, craters, settling, sagging, film cracking
  • Target product class and VOC/regulatory limits
  • Compatibility with topcoats and other additives (silicone/silicone-free)
  • Production equipment, order of addition and scale

Use and dosage

Typical dosages on total formulation: defoamer 0.1–0.5%; wetting agent/dispersant 0.5–2% of pigment weight; HEC thickener 0.2–0.6%; coalescent 3–8% of binder solids. Additives are usually split between the grind (dispersion) and let-down stages; the optimum dose is set in your formulation with foam, colour strength, viscosity and film tests.

The ranges given are typical values; the exact dosage is determined by the product’s Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and a trial in your own process.

Packaging, storage and shelf life

25–30 kg cans, 200 kg drums and IBCs; powders in 25 kg bags. Store between +5 °C and +35 °C, protected from frost; shelf life up to 12 months depending on the product.

Why Biyopol?

Biyopol Kimya is an industrial chemicals manufacturer producing in İzmir, Türkiye since 1992. It offers own-brand products and contract manufacturing in nine product groups, provides a TDS/SDS for every product, runs trials in its laboratory and at the customer’s site, and supplies in cans, drums and IBCs.

Frequently asked questions

Why does foam form in water-based paint?

Air entrained during mixing, pumping and filling, together with the surfactants in the formulation, causes foam. Adding the defoamer at the right stage and in the right amount is important.

What does a dispersant do?

Dispersants ensure that pigments and fillers are evenly distributed in the paint and reduce the risk of settling and colour variation.

How is an additive’s compatibility with my formulation checked?

Because every formulation behaves differently, a laboratory-scale compatibility trial is recommended. Sharing the general structure of your formulation with your sample request is enough.

How can I get samples and technical documents (SDS / TDS)?

Use our Request a Quote form and select “Sample request” or “SDS / TDS request”; our team will send you the documents you need.
