What is a corrosion inhibitor and how do you choose one?
Corrosion inhibitors are chemicals that reduce the corrosion rate by adsorbing on the metal surface or forming a protective film. Water-soluble inhibitors are used in cooling and process water; oil-soluble inhibitors in oils, fuels and protective coatings; vapour-phase (VCI) inhibitors in closed packaging and storage; acid inhibitors protect the base metal during acid cleaning; pipeline inhibitors control CO₂/H₂S corrosion in oil and gas systems.
Selection depends on the medium (water, oil, acid, gas), temperature, flow regime, metal type and the required protection period.
Selection criteria
- Medium and phase: aqueous system, hydrocarbon, vapour phase, acidic solution
- Metal type and galvanic effects in multi-metal systems
- Temperature, pressure, flow velocity and water cut
- Application: continuous injection, batch, dipping, in-package
- Regulatory and compatibility needs: nitrite/chromate-free, food contact, marine discharge
Use and dosage
Typical dosages: aqueous system inhibitors 10–50 ppm continuous; pipeline inhibitors 20–100 ppm continuous or batch; acid inhibitor 0.1–0.5% in the acid solution; VCI products according to the protected volume (e.g. 1 g per litre of package volume, or as film/paper); oil-soluble protectives 1–5% in oil. Effectiveness is monitored with coupons, electrochemical probes and iron counts, and the dose is updated according to field results.
The ranges given are typical values; the exact dosage is determined by the product’s Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and a trial in your own process.
Packaging, storage and shelf life
Supplied in 25–30 kg cans, 200 kg drums and IBCs. Store between +5 °C and +35 °C in closed packaging; shelf life 12–24 months depending on the product.
Why Biyopol?
Biyopol Kimya is an industrial chemicals manufacturer producing in İzmir, Türkiye since 1992. It offers own-brand products and contract manufacturing in nine product groups, provides a TDS/SDS for every product, runs trials in its laboratory and at the customer’s site, and supplies in cans, drums and IBCs.
Frequently asked questions
What is VCI?
VCIs (vapour corrosion inhibitors) evaporate inside closed packaging and form a protective layer on metal surfaces; they are widely used in storage and shipping.
How do I choose the right corrosion inhibitor?
The metal, protection period, ambient humidity and temperature, and the type of packaging or system are assessed together.
How is corrosion prevented in closed-loop systems?
A suitable inhibitor is added to the water in closed-loop heating and cooling systems and its concentration is checked regularly.
How can I get samples and technical documents (SDS / TDS)?
Use our Request a Quote form and select “Sample request” or “SDS / TDS request”; our team will send you the documents you need.
